Former PM Edison James says solution for poverty reduction is to provide people with work …Reporter: Zakiya Shillingford Date: December 20, 2013
Former Prime Minister of Dominica, Edison James, says the only solution to poverty reduction in Dominica, is for the Government to provide the opportunity for the people to be able to earn their own resources. The statistical office reported earlier this month, that two surveys, conducted to measure the reduction of poverty in 2002 and 2009, shows that there has been a 12% decrease in poverty in Dominica over a 7 year period. The office also announced that Governments’ various social programs such as the public welfare assistance program, school feeding program, school supply textbook program, and small business fund, have contributed to this 12% reduction. However the Former Prime Minister says he disagrees with this report. James says adding more Dominicans to the list of recipients of Government handouts does not address the core issue of poverty in the country.
